Historical jewelry #TBT 💎 August's newest birthstone, Spinel, has a long history of being misidentified for a ruby. In fact, many famous rubies are spinel!

The Timur Ruby of the British Crown Jewels, the center uncut 352.5 carat stone in this necklace, is actually a red spinel. It is inscribed with the names/dates of it's 6 previous owners from about 1300's-1754. The British took the Timur in 1849 as part of an Indian collection and turned it into a necklace in 1853, as part of the British Crown Jewels. It was believed to be a ruby all the way up until 1851.

Gilbert and Juliet Robinson have just celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary! The couple married on August 5, 1958, and over their years of happy marriage, welcomed four children – Vanessa, Susannah, Philip and Matthew.

Eldest daughter Vanessa shared with the Comet some of her favorite childhood memories. “We had an extremely happy childhood with parents who were devoted to every aspect of our lives. With little disposable income and hardly any money spent on themselves, our parents invested it in family holidays and music lessons for us children. Dad was very practical. He rewired and replumbed our house, made us a full-sized table tennis table and always seemed to have a part of a car engine on the breakfast room table!

"Just as dad was reliable, honourable, reasonable and the perfect father, mum – who came to be a primary school teacher in Arlesey – was the perfect mother. She welcomed all of our friends to our house and allowed us to develop in our own way. There were few rules and she was a brilliant peace-keeper. We had lots of pets and a large pond with lots of frogs.

“She also took a very active part in all of their grandsons’ childhoods, and continues to have a close relationship with all five."

Congratulations to this beautiful couple on 60 years together and for raising an amazing family!

Class and Sass! That’s how most people would describe Chuck’s Mom, Dorothy. We lost this beautiful woman a few days ago. She was 96 yrs young! Still gardening, keeping her kids on their toes and loving life! She will be missed by many. We will be closed Thursday August 9th to honor this special lady we call Mom.

In 2016, a BRAND NEW birthstone, Spinel, was added to the month of August! This is only the 2nd update to the American Gem Trade Association's official birthstone list since it was created in 1912.

Ancient gemstone merchants revered spinel, and it was widely sought after by royalty. It was then known as ‘balas ruby.’ In fact, many famous "rubies" in crown jewels from around the world are actually spinels! Examples of notable spinel in history are a 170-carat red spinel, known as the “Black Prince Ruby,” that is set in the Imperial State Crown in the British Crown Jewels, and a 398-carat red spinel that sits atop the Imperial Crown of Russia commissioned by Catherine the Great in 1763.

What do you think of August's new birthstone?!

The traditional birthstone for August is peridot!

This gemstone comes in several variations ranging from yellowish green to brown, but most consumers are attracted to the bright lime greens and olive greens. Peridot is a gemstone that forms deep inside the Earth and brought to the surface by volcanoes. In Hawaii, peridot symbolizes the tears of Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanoes. Today, most of the peridot supply comes from Arizona, US.
